Festival della Maddalena

La Maddalena festival La valigia dell’attore is an annual meeting and an in-depth study dedicated to the work of the actor Gian Maria Volonté. It is taking place, and not by chance, on the island that this artist loved, where he lived several times in his life and that he chose as his last home. The festival was set up in 2003 thanks to the will of the cultural association Quasar which aimed at increasing the commitment, born several years earlier in this territory, of analysis and promotion of culture and entertainment. The event enjoys the participation of the interpreters of the best Italian and European film production, it is intended to be a meeting ground among the different forms of expression of the art of acting, by exploring and focusing its attention mainly on originality, charm and cinema techniques, but also on theatre and television techniques. The film showings scheduled are preceded by meetings where the guests’ artistic careers are presented and analysed. The actors, after watching an editing of sequences taken from films they interpreted, are interviewed and asked to share their experiences by university teachers and cinema critics, thus allowing the audience to have a new, original and intimate look at their work.

La valigia dell’attore wishes as well to promote a different vision and enjoyment of the archipelago of La Maddalena. Focused on the actor’s figure, it is aimed at a variegated audience with a programme that includes, from its planning, the aspiration and the potential needed to cross regional and national borders.

At a cultural level, the event occupies an unusual place on the national scene, and it is ideally related to the figures and tradition of the great Italian post-war art, in order to investigate the figure of Gian Maria Volonté, who nowadays is a point of reference for a new generation of actors whose creative work is at the basis for a revival of our cinema.

The Gian Maria Volonté Prize

The Gian Maria Volonté Prize - created by Felice Laudadio - who, in the past, celebrated the talent, among others, of Toni Servillo, Kim Rossi Stuart, Riccardo Scamarcio, Giuseppe Battiston, Silvio Orlando, Luigi Lo Cascio, Fabrizio Gifuni first at the Taormina Festival, then at those of Rome and Bari - will be awarded for the third year running in La Maddalena by Le isole del cinema and it will pay tribute to Valerio Mastandrea’s artistic excellence.

Workshop on the actor’s techniques

Since 2010 La valigia dell’attore has been accompanied by an advanced residential workshop on acting techniques for sixteen young people coming from the main national acting schools. It is realised by Quasar and by the Centro Teatro Ateneo of La Sapienza University of Rome. After Toni Servillo, Paolo Rossi and Pierfrancesco Favino, the 2013 edition will be presented by Sonia Bergamasco. The video recording of the workshop, like its previous ones, will be published on the website EUROPEANA (European Digital Library).
